5 Signs You Are Ready to Step Up to Registered Manager

Making the Leap to RM
Becoming a Registered Manager is one of the biggest career moves in children's residential care. But how do you know when you're actually ready?
1. You Already Think Like a Manager
If you're a Deputy who finds yourself thinking about the bigger picture — staffing rotas, quality of care plans, training gaps — you're already in the right mindset.
2. You Can Handle Difficult Conversations
Managing a children's home means having tough conversations: with staff about performance, with placing authorities about placements, and sometimes with Ofsted. If you've developed this skill as a Deputy, you're closer than you think.
3. You Understand Regulation Inside Out
The Children's Homes Regulations 2015 and the Quality Standards should feel familiar, not foreign. You don't need to quote paragraph numbers, but you should know the principles.
4. You Have Support
No RM succeeds alone. If you have — or can build — a strong Deputy and Senior team, and you're backed by a Responsible Individual who understands the sector, you're in a good position.
5. You Want It for the Right Reasons
The best RMs are driven by wanting to create brilliant homes for children, not just a title or salary. If that's your motivation, you're ready.
